The Faculty of English Linguistics & Literature (EF) was originally part of the Foreign Languages Department of Faculty of Letters, Institute of Saigon University established in 1949 and later was given priority in development in 1955. The Bachelor program in English Linguistics and Literature was one among the first programs offered then, together with the Bachelor of Arts in French Linguistics and Literature.

Since its establishment, the undergraduate program in English Linguistics and Literature has experienced several changes of different names, under different administration, with updated curriculum and training objectives.

After the country liberation (in 1975), the Faculty of Letters and Faculty of Sciences of the Saigon University were merged into Ho Chi Minh University in 1977, the largest training center for basic research in the South of Vietnam. The Department of English had remained part of the Foreign Languages Faculty until 1990 when the Department of English was officially separated into a department per se. In 1996, the needs for further development and expansion made Ho Chi Minh University segregated into two institutions University of Social Sciences & Humanities and University of Natural Sciences, as two member institution of Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City. The official name of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature was given since then and has been kept up to the present. Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City is envisioned to be “a high quality, high-tech and multi-disciplinary training center for undergraduate and graduate studies and a well-qualified research hub in Vietnam’s higher education system, contributing to and meeting the demands for socio-economical development” (http://www.vnuhcm.edu.vn ).
