The second International Conference on English Language Teaching (ICELT-2014)

To continue the great success of ICELT 2012, ICELT 2014 was successfully held on 24-25 October 2014 by the faculty of English Linguistics & Literature, University of Social Sciences & Humanities (Vietnam National University –HCM) at the main campus, 10-12 Dinh Tien Hoang, Dist.1, Ho Chi Minh City.

ICELT 2014, envisioned as a biennial scientific conference, aims to provide a platform for local and foreign experts, lecturers, teachers, educators, graduate students and senior students to exchange expertise and experience, to share achievements and research outputs, to update current trends, and to enhance future developments of ESL/EFL learning and teaching.

 

 

 

The Conference can select 45 presentations from more than one hundred submitted papers by writers fromSingapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Those papers are published in the conference proceedings with ISBN coded 978-604-908-963-3, which is highly appreciated by most of participants through the conference evaluation.

In his opening speech to ICELT2014, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vo Van Sen, President of the USSH, highlights the important role of the conference: “ICELT 2014 provides an practical academic forum for academicians well interested in English teaching pedagogy of the four language skills; in issues related to linguistics, cultural studies, literary studies, translation and interpretation; in integration of ICT in teaching and learning English; as well as in quality assurance and human resource training for ELT...”

Dr. Le Hoang Dung, Dean of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, also warmly welcomes all delegates, keynote speaker, presenters, moderators and participants from Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines and Viet Nam and briefly highlights the major topics covered by the presentations.

The two-day conference starts with an open forum by 10 poster presentations of research results around Hall D lobby, which receives many interesting academic questions from the viewers.

One major highlight during the plenary session on the first morning is the presentation by Prof. Dr. Christine C. M. Goh, Dean of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. She has emphasized and reminded the participants of the important role of metacognition “thinking about thinking” and a real need to make it more visible in teaching speaking and listening in particular, two fundamental skills in language communication.  Metacognition will specifically guides and shapes the English learners’ thinking and practice in a more systematic and principled manner. This keynote address really inspires the audience and arouses them to ask interesting questions.

In the remaining 9 parallel sessions, more than 180 participants and delegates have actively participated in discussing and sharing experiences through reports and presentations on learning and teaching issues, English linguistic researches, techniques in teaching literature, pronunciation and writing skills, teaching culture, literature, technology or linguistics in language teaching and quality management in ELT, among others.  These sessions have been designed to enhance the development of ELT within the emerging context of ASEAN region and the world. This gathering enables the building of a productive dialogue between universities and provides possible avenues for networking and for making fruitful contacts among ASEAN experts, educators and professionals.

Especially, ICELT 2014 receives a warm attention of the mass media and those who belong to cultural and educational field. After the two active and fruitful working days, the ICELT 2014 has enriched and inspired all participants. ICELT2014 ends with a promise to honorably welcome again all scholars, experts, educators, students and participants to the third international conference -ICELT 2016. The Organizing Committee has truly thanked and hopes to continue receiving more contribution and support from both academicians and organizations for the next ICELT in 2016, thus enhancing the teaching and learning of English in Vietnam to meet the need and demand for using English in the new socio-economic context of the country.
