The fifth International Conference of English Language Teaching (ICELT), as a continuation of the previous four successful biennial events, returned this year to be held on 17th and 18th December 2020 by the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature (EF), University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH).

ICELT is a significant academic event organized by EF that serves as a forum for academics and graduate students to exchange knowledge and expertise, share experience and research outputs, and update current trends and future development in ESL and EFL. The event is expected to contribute to USSH’s mission to become a prestige research university in Asia.

Despite Covid-19 impacts, the conference received a large volume of papers under the theme “ELT for Lifelong Learning in the New Decade” that exceeded EF’s expectation. and the 150 participants and guests from universities, research institutes and linguistics centers nationwide and worldwide.

The conference began with plenary sessions where keynote speakers, Prof. Shahid Abrar Hassan and Dr. Rochelle Lucas from Canada and The Philippines, and our host presented the latest studies on teaching and assessment. Due to travel restrictions during the pandemic, this is the first time our keynote speakers had to deliver their presentations online. However, ICELT lost very little of its appeal to experts and people working in the field, shown in the engagement and interaction from the audience. The topics of parallel presentations centering around the main theme included language learning, teaching and assessment; lifelong learning in curriculum and materials development; technology in language teaching; management and leadership in ELT.

After two productive conference days, ICELT 2020 ended in satisfaction of participants and presenters who looked forward to the sixth ICELT coming back in two years with another compelling theme.
