Contest seeks future translators among Ho Chi Minh City college students

The final round of a student translation contest is slated to take place in Ho Chi Minh City this weekend, as the English faculty of a major university celebrates its second biennial reunion.

The Future Translators’ Contest 2015, organized by the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature (EF) of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), kicked off in September, with three teams beating nearly 100 other contenders to advance into the finale on Saturday.

The finalists include the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City and the hosts USSH, the organizers said in a press release on Tuesday.

The competition challenges contestants, who are students from universities in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring cities and provinces, to translate pieces of news, idioms, songs, and videos from English to Vietnamese and vice versa, according to the organizers.

The finalists will compete in the “Let’s Share” event, where their literature translation skills wil be challenged, and the “Let’s Sing” category, where they are required to sing songs translated by themselves.

The three teams are also required to act as interpreters for a seminar, “The Influence of Music on Forming the U.S. and Vietnamese Culture,” as part of the final competition.

The finale will take place on the USSH campus in District 1, in a series of activities held to celebrate EF’s second edition of its traditional festival, called the EFair 2015.

The maiden EFair was launched in 2013, in what was the first-ever reunion in six decades for the faculty’s alumni and current enrollees.

Following the success of the first reunion, the EFair 2015, running from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm on Saturday, also aims to bring together, and forge a link between, the EF students and future employers.

The festival will also reunite generations of EF lecturers with their students, so that the predecessors can share their experience with the current enrollees, according to the organizers.

Besides the translation contest, the reunion will also feature a career orientation session, a meeting to connect alumni and current students, a photo exhibition, and a closing gala dinner at the end of the day.

Established in 1957, EF is one of the oldest departments at USSH, Vietnam’s leading social science university, with its admission bar among the highest of the school.

The faculty is now running undergraduate and graduate courses in English linguistics and literature, translation, American and British studies, and others for over 5,000 students.
